Grim sight at oil stricken beach

It is a grim sight on Mount Mauganui beach today with more black blobs of oil scattering the shoreline.

Clumps of oil have washed ashore overnight from stricken container ship Rena, concentrated in areas from Mount Maunganui main beach heading towards Papamoa.

SunLive photographer Tracy Hardy took these images from Mount Mauganui Beach this morning.

There is more oil coming with Maritime New Zealand deputy national on scene commander Alex van Wijngaarden saying the overnight storm forced more oil to leak.

He estimates 130-350 tonnes of oil leaked into the sea from the grounded ship Rena and this oil is forecast to wash up on beaches from 9am on Wednesday.
