Armed police cordon off Te Puna Road

UPDATED: Police are asking people to avoid Te Puna Road as they carry out a pre-planned warrant.

The armed offenders squad has been called to help police with their operation.

A police spokesperson says Te Puna Road is cordoned off between Armstrong and Te Puna Station Road.

"There's not believed to be any risk to the public at this stage, but people are being asked to avoid the area."

No other information has been released at this stage.

EARLIER:

Reports are coming in of a large police presence in the Bethlehem area.

A SunLive reader emailed in to say about "15 police cars went flying past his house on Waihi Road, heading towards Bethlehem, sirens on".

Another reader reported seeing about 11 police cars in Bethlehem.
