60,000 affected by widespread power cut

At its peak more than 60,000 customers were without power supply.

Power has been restored in the Coromandel and Waikato areas after a Transpower outage caused widespread power cuts earlier this morning.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says, at its peak, more than 60,000 Powerco customers were without supply.

'It took Powerco about an hour to complete reconnection once Transpower had restored national grid supply. We have to restore power in stages to prevent overloading.”

The outage affected areas including Matamata, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Putaruru, Waihi, Paeroa, Kaihere, Katikati, Whangamata, Thames, Te Poi, Tirau and Cambridge.

All supply was restored to affected areas by 10am.

The cause of the fault is not yet known and teams continue to investigate.
