Rough weather delays cruise ship

The arrival of the cruise ship Diamond Princess into the Port of Tauranga has been delayed today due to rough weather on the east coast of the North Island.

The delay follows the sudden death of an 80-year-old man onboard yesterday while the ship was docked at Napier Port.

The man is believed to have suffered a medical event and could not be revived.

The Diamond Princess was originally due to arrive in Tauranga at 7am today but is now expected at 9.45am.

A SunLive reporter at the port says the delay has resulted in the cancellation of several tours so there will be an extra influx of passengers expected to flow into Mount Maunganui and Tauranga today. The ship has more than 1000 passengers on board.

The Diamond Princess is one of five cruise ships stopping in Tauranga over the next few days.

The L'Austral, with more than 200 passengers, arrived this morning around 8am.

Tomorrow will see the arrival of two cruise ships, the Sea Princess and the Radiance of the Seas, and on New Year's Eve the Norwegian Jewel will be in port.
