One person is dead following a single-car crash in Oropi last night.

Police have confirmed that the driver died at the scene of the crash on Pyes Pa Road between Williams Road and Taumata Road.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene around 10.15pm, where the car hit a tree.

The scene was closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

Police have not released any details of a the occupant/occupants of the vehicle at this stage.

The deceased will be named when all next of kin have been notified.
