Graduating students of Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology's Bachelor of Creative Industries degree will be putting their final body of work on display this Friday and Saturday.

The exhibition, called ‘Pivot', will feature varied works of visual art, graphic design, photography and fashion design.

Mary Stewart, Group Manager for Art, Design and Fashion, says the works reflect a high level of conceptual thinking.

'The exhibition is aptly named because to pivot is to be agile on your feet, to be always thinking. The works on display from these graduating students show outstanding development of ideas and creativity.”

Graphic Design student Leah Jackson created her Kiwiana brand ‘Daffy & Yarn' during the degree and also designed the look and feel for Pivot. She says the whole Bachelor of Creative Industries degree has been based around collaboration.

'The students from the three majors work together, so we've got fashion, art and graphic design colliding all the time. Some students have started business together, plus many of us have mentors from industry.”

Mary says the support from, and collaboration with, industry has been crucial.

'Working with industry means our students have received the kind of critical feedback they need to develop their ideas and their practice. It also allows them a chance to network and make those contacts they'll need for employment and internships.”

Among the showcase are multiple award-winning students, including Hokonui Design winner Lyndon Sheehan, Rotorua Museum Emerging Artist Cheyenne Rose and short film maker Mita Tahata.

'This is a class of creative heavy-hitters,” says Mary. 'We're excited to see what they'll bring to the field of creative industries.”

The Pivot exhibit starts at 6pm Friday November 17 at the Te Ara o Mauao building, Windermere campus and is open to the public.

The fashion show will take place from 7.30pm-9pm and is a ticketed event. An Open Day will be held on Saturday November 18 from 11am-2pm and is a chance to meet and greet the artists and view their work up close.
