An 18-year-old man has been flown to hospital with suspected head injuries following a crash between a truck and car.

Emergency services, including the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter, were called to the scene on State 27, near Ngarua north of Matamata, yesterday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the rescue chopper says the 18-year-old driver of the car was stabilised at the scene and was then flown to Waikato Hospital with a suspected head injury.

Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood says the driver of the car was initially trapped, before being freed and flown to hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
