Hundreds of people have gathered on Mauao for the unveiling for the latest masterpiece from an internationally acclaimed artist.

Tauranga's own Graeme Hoete, aka Mr G, has been working on a mural he says is close to his heart.

The theme of this work is kaitiakitanga, which translates to guardianship. It is also about the Mana Moana, Mana Tangata, Mana Whenua message and movement.

'To me it represents the unity of the local iwi to protect the land.

'The works I do are inspired by what's important to me, what I love. This one is no different.”

Mr G unveiled the artwork to a large group of people this afternoon.

Your quite remarkable work puts us on the international map, and we very much appreciate it. We are all proud of you mate. But whoever did that video for you has let you down. The audio and image quality is crap.

Awesome artwork

We are so lucky to have such a talented artist living in the bay and sharing that talent with us.

This amazing transformation will attract even more inbound cruise ship passengers to walk the iconic Pilot Bay, Mauao, ocean beach circuit. The sooner we have in place a few strategically placed 'online donation stations' to allow folk to express their appreciation, contribute to upkeep and enhancements, the better. Perhaps 'on-line donation stations' could be installed at various locations and assets, that are provided at no-cost to the user, managed and funds distributed independent of the Council and those who would use and abuse the income. Mauao upkeep (NOT meeting allowances), Surf life saving, boat ramps, significant walking/cycle infrastructure ...
