A Sublime Mess

Paintings and the objects that inspire them. Photos and video: Rosalie Liddle Crawford.

Maggie Bowcock has titled her latest exhibition ‘A Sublime Mess'.

A sublime unrestrained effusion of swans, tuis, pohutukawa and flowers is what greets viewers of her paintings.

On show at the Macandmor Art Space in the Goddard's Centre in Tauranga, Maggie's work evokes memories of the Sanderson English Country Rose and Peony Vintage and Chelsea Rose print collections dating back to the 1860s.

Of French influence, those designs were also luxurious and colourful, classic and timeless.

Maggie has captured autumn colours and late summer vibrancy using oil on board and Bockingford paper. Placed near the paintings are collections of the day to day objects that surround and inspire her while she paints - a white glazed pottery vase in the form of a swan, a birdcage and platters.

The exhibition runs until July 3 at the Macandmor Art Space, in the Goddards Centre, from 9am – 2.30pm each day.
