Earthquakes strike near Whakatane

A series of earthquakes have been recorded near Whakatane this afternoon. Image: GeoNet.

The Bay of Plenty has been rocked by a series of earthquakes this afternoon.

The first earthquake was recorded 30km north-west of Whakatane at 1.35pm.

GeoNet says the 3.8 magnitude quake was light in intensity and was only 10km deep.

The second shake came four minutes later at 1.39pm, when a 2.1 quake hit 30km north-west of Whakatane.

This earthquake had a focal depth of 5km.

At 1.41pm, there was a 2.4 quake. This was followed by a second 2.4 at 1.48pm. All the quakes have been recorded in the same area.

Saw a flash. Then a splash. I rang the cops. What is it with a these meteors going off?
