Bubbles set to splash at Spirit of Papamoa launch

The Spirit of Papamoa surf boat will receive the traditional splash of bubbles when it is officially launched by Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club today. Its public float rides on the back of a successful campaign to raise $25,000 to complete the purchase of the new custombuilt Sonic craft.

Papamoa Rotarians Jim Carroll and Barbara Joyce at Papamoa Rescue Base with Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club president and fellow Rotarian Matthew Pickering.

Major sponsor, the Rotary Club of Papamoa, has donated $10,000 towards the project; $5000 from a grant through the Rotary Foundation's district designated funds scheme and the balance donated directly by the club.
The public has contributed generously according to Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club president Matthew Pickering. More than $3000 was raised in a bucket appeal at Labour Weekend when the boat was displayed at Palm Beach Plaza. Businesses and locals have also become shareholders – buying $100 units to become official Spirit of Papamoa supporters.
All have been invited to the official launch that's set to start at 9am today at the rescue base off Domain Road. Among the official guests will be Dave Taylor from Gisborne who builds the Sonic surf boats.
Weighing some 100kgs lighter than the 20-year old surf boat Papamoa lifeguards restored last season, the new surf boat is already proving valuable. Existing open and under 19 men's crews are finding the boat lighter and more manoeuverable. Under the guidance of coach and sweep Darren Burke, a women's crew has also been established and more lifeguards are queuing up to give it a go.
