Chinese whisper goose chase

Two Tauranga men were questioned and frisked in central Tauranga on Thursday afternoon after a case of ‘Chinese whispers' led police to believe a robbery was in progress.
Senior sergeant Stu Graham says the two men were spoken to and it was found they had not done anything illicit.

'They were found in the area, we spoke to them and it turned out to be nothing,” says Stu.
He says a police volunteer spotted the two men acting suspiciously near the Westpac Bank at the bottom of Devonport Road and reported her observation through to 111 Police Communications Centre.
'What was said got distorted and there was never any robbery. But it came out through ‘coms' that there was a robbery,” says Stu.

He says police want to know of any suspicious activity.
'It's better to know, then not know; than have criminal activity take place,” says Stu.
