UPDATED 5.10PM: NZTA reports the highway is now open to traffic.

Earlier, the Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter was dispatched to evacuate the injured victim, landing on Pyes Pa Road.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area for at least an hour while this takes place.

4.30PM:

A section of State Highway 36 has been closed due to a crash near the intersection of Pyes Pa Road and Te Matai Road.

NZTA recommends delaying travel, or taking an alternative route.

Last month 63-year-old Nelson Hei Hei of Rotorua died after crashing his truck and trailer unit on the same stretch of highway.

In that instance the highway was closed for several days due to potential contamination from the spillage of 84, 200 litre drums of resin and ferric chloride that fell off the vehicle during the crash.

According to the NZTA website, the road currently has a temporary 30km/h speed restriction in place.

EARLIER:

Emergency services are currently responding to a crash at the intersection of Pyes Pa Road and Te Matai Road.

A police spokesperson says they were called at around 3.35pm by a member of the public who drove past.

"The car was reported to have a lot of damage to the front."

It is believed the car crashed into a bank.

"A female driver is currently trapped, with moderate to serious injuries."
