Tauranga's new waterfront pier will be closed this Thursday and Friday for minor works.
Tauranga City Council reports these works are to finish off the pier in preparation for the Paradox Street Food Festival and tidal stairs opening on Saturday.
People will still be able to walk along the waterfront, enjoy the tidal stairs and surrounding play areas, which have proven incredibly popular since their completion early last month.

Nice asset for Tauranga and testament to the worth of forward positive thinking. With winter coming on, it probably won't be fully realised now until next summer, but good to plan ahead and be ready.
Repairs and waterblast please

I understand TCC has let a $200k contract to water blast the steps. Hopefully this will be done BEFORE the kids arrive, removing the green algae and mud from the steps. Could TCC also replace or repair the child proof gates as latches are broken and they do not self close.
Closed again

Barely opened and it is shut again?
Get in there quick

Within weeks or perhaps a month or so the fancy new concrete will be covered in slim, barnacles and other sticky gremlins, it will then be a complete hazard to all and any near it there after!
Ignore the negative thinkers

Easier than cleaning a hull. But I wouldn't recommend using water blasters anywhere near it - lazy man's yard broom! Water blasters will eventually expose the aggregate. Anti-fouling is not a good idea either due to toxicity. This is the sea - expect some sealife. It's healthy, physically and mentally.Sissy townies might call it "sticky gremlins" but we expect that. If our kids don't have outdoorsy (sic) stuff like this, they will grow up to be the same. Don't want that do we.A couple of staff down there with yard brooms at say every 10th low tide, would not be cost prohibitive.
An historical example

I can remember visiting Plymouth Devonshire about 20 years ago and seeing tidal stairs similar to these, covered in kids swimming, right on Plymouth Hoe, and already quite old then. I saw no signs of "sticky gremlins" or anything else similar to the emotionally charged descriptions used on here by mischievous exaggerators who we see on here regularly attempting to stir up anti-council sentiment, and pretty much anti everything that pulses or makes people happy. What miserable lives they must lead. As to being "closed" It is not uncommon for a whole range of facilities to be temporarily closed for maintenance or final checks before official openings. Naturally, the stairs will be periodically "closed" in future for cleaning etc. That's perfectly normal. Best just ignore these miserable spoilsports and get on with life.

Ah, thank you for bringing back my childhood memories of swimming there hundreds of times as have many generations both before and after mine. There were also a couple of rafts there for kids to swim out to. A lovely spot with lots of memories that I hope to visit again soon. PS The public pool there is also a standout feature. (Yes it is open again).

It's still there, but the city is not the same since the 1950's, 60's architects rebuilt parts destroyed by the German Luftwaffer. Except for the Barbicam which somehow got missed. The hooter still goes as the gate opens for boats. Anyway, I have recently discovered that there are tidal stairs in other NZ cities eg; Oriental Bay Wellington. Been there for nearly 2 decades I'm told, and no accidents.
