A brake fault stopped a freight train leaving Tauranga today in its tracks – 500m inside the 8.9km Kaimai Tunnel.

The fault resulted in the train losing air pressure which locked the brakes on, says a KiwiRail spokesperson.

'The driver, who was the sole crew member, secured the train and walked out of the tunnel,” says the spokesperson.

'Another locomotive will recover the train shortly.”

Tauranga emergency services were notified as normal procedure.
