Car plunges into Tauranga harbour

A great deal of weed has made its way into the car overnight. Photos: Ryan Wood.

A red car sitting on the wrong side of the bank, almost fully submerged at high tide.

That was the sight that greeted early risers taking a stroll this morning along the end of Maxwells Road in Bureta.

Geoff Ellett was out walking the dog this morning when he noticed the shattered wooden barrier on the corner of Maxwells Road and Harbour Drive.

'They've completely failed to take the corner and knocked out a couple of bollards on the way. It landed a couple metres out in the water.”

Another resident – David – says he was having dessert when the car went in around 9pm last night.

He came down to investigate, and found two men, one of whom was out of the vehicle ‘waving his arms about'.

'He was saying ‘get a rope, get a rope.' But there wasn't much that could be done.”

He reckons the driver might have missed the fact the road ended where it did, as there appears to be no evidence of the car braking or trying to turn.

'The driver was pretty upset – he said it was his brother's car.”

Police attended with a tow truck, but were unable to remove the vehicle at the time.

No one is believed to have been injured in the incident.

Kiwi Drivers

Doesn't give you much faith in the drivers around here if they can't even manage to drive between the white lines of their lane let alone stay on the road. Considering this is residential 50km as well. Maybe it's time drivers involved in accidents where they're at fault, should be made to reapply and resit their driving tests again before getting back on the road.
