Alcohol and cigarettes have been taken in a ram raid at a Tauranga liquor store.

An alarm was set off at the Thirsty Liquor Store on Chapel Street around 12.15am.

There's evidence that bollards had been damaged out the front of the shop, and the doors had been forced, says Sergeant Phil Wilkinson.

'It's believed this was the result of a vehicle being used. A silver Mazda Familia or similar vehicle was seen leaving the area, heading south on Chapel Street.

'Alcohol and cigarettes were taken.”

Police have attended the scene to conduct forensic examination, and are working on following lines of inquiry, which includes any CCTV footage.

If anyone noticed a vehicle similar to a silver Mazda Familia in the area overnight, or knows of a vehicle of that description which may have sustained damage to the rear and sides, they are asked to call Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

No surprises here

No surprises here - I predicted an escalation of these thefts happening long ago. A Direct result of the governments high taxes on cigarettes in order to save themselves money on the public health system. It may save the lives of a few people who chose to smoke, but it ALSO puts every innocent shop and dairy owner (not to mention the general public) at risk of violent thefts. I have considered calling crimestoppers to report the government as those responsible for these thefts, but I dont think they would understand. Wait till the health nazis do the same with coca cola and watch the fun escalate even further.

On what you think Governments are for TK. If you believe they are there to "mother" people then they should tax the hell out of things that cause harm and result in high costs to the health system. I don't disagree with your notion entirely, but if you follow it through to its conclusion ALL healthcare would need to be paid for privately. That way people could "choose" to do whatever they wanted, because they would ultimately have to pay for their care. But whilst ever there is tax funded healthcare, it is only logical that those who choose to put themselves at risk are asked to pay "extra", through tax on the harmful things. Whilst your assertion that these taxes are causing an increase in this type of crime may be true, it isn't an argument for removing or reducing those taxes.

Bit strong old chap

Are you advocating banning all sales of valuable goods across the board?

...The Tomahawk Kid, I refer to the piece written in regard to your apparent need to free up the availability of mind altering substances to all, which in my opinion will result in total and absolute anarchy....to be absolutely clear, I have no problem with people doing this to themselves if it is done in a way that it has NO impact, personal or financial, on anyone else except the user. It does though...doesn't it..every time...we ( I say "we" respectfully), are not intelligent or grown up enough to respect such drugs (yes including tobacco and alcohol) and use within parameters so as not to affect society in general. TK, why do they/you have to do this to excess?..for free?..(theft)..and have no concern for other humans as a result of their self inflicted needs ?..answer this and I will consider your viewpoint slightly less irrational..slightly.
