No NZ tsunami threat after Chile quake

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management says there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following a magnitude 6.9 earthquake off the Chilean coastline.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres and was located about 38km west of Valparaiso in central Chile at about 9.38am (NZT).

Initially measured at 6.7 magnitude quake, the PTWC since revised it up to 6.9, while the United States Geological Service recorded the quake as 7.1.

According to the USGS website, there's been a flurry of seismic activity following the initial quake, with magnitudes ranging from 5.4 to 4.7.
