What’s On? Anzac Day

Dawn in Mount Maunagnui today sent in by SunLive reader Cherry Fowles. Photo: Cherry Fowles

Good morning Sunners and welcome to Anzac Day - a sombre day where we reflect upon the sacrifices of Kiwi soldiers who fought at Gallipoli and other conflicts since.

In commemoration of Anzac Day a number of events are being staged around the city to honour and remember those sacrifices including the Tauranga Civic Memorial Service at Memorial Park, and the Pick and Shovel Men Leave Their Mark Exhibition at masonic Park on The Strand.

Tauranga City Council is inviting the community to join them today at this year's Anzac Day Civic Service which will commemorates 102 years since the Battle of Gallipoli and is taking place at 9am down at Memorial Park.

A free park and ride service will be available from Tauranga Boys' College on Devonport Road to Memorial Park from 8am to 8:40am, with returning buses immediately following the Civic Memorial Service. All buses are accessible for the mobility impaired.

Car Parking will be available in the boys' college Car Park off Devonport Road, between Thirteenth and Fourteenth Avenues, and marshals will be onsite to help people to the busses.

Pak'nSave located on Cameron Road, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues have made their above ground car park available for people attending the Anzac Day Civic Memorial Service to use.

Car parking for mobility cardholders only will also be available along the waterfront area of Memorial Park.

During the service road closures will be in place on Fraser Street between Eleventh and Thirteenth Avenues and on Eleventh Avenue between Fraser Street and Devonport Road, including the roundabouts from 8am – 11am.

The latest exhibition from Tauranga to the Trenches explores the tunnels beneath Arras, France, highlighting the hardships and achievements of the New Zealand Engineers Tunnelling Company , left their mark on the World War One landscape.

The company, which included a number of Waihi and Karangahake miners, was deployed to the Arras area where they engaged in frontline underground warfare during WW1.

They were the first New Zealand unit on the Western Front and the last off it. In 2016 the first-ever memorial – a 7.5 metre tall sculpture and memorial wall – dedicated to their sacrifices was unveiled in Waihi.

The Pick and Shovel Men Leave Their Mark Exhibition can be found at Masonic Park on The Strand until May 20, and is open daily from 9.30am-4pm (weather dependent). To learn more about the NZ Tunnelling Company, visit www.nztunnellers.com
