There's something both sad and beautiful about the end of daylight savings.
On the one hand, it marks a definite end to summer, ushering in dark evenings and a new chill to the wind, even if the sun is still shining.
But it is beautiful, too, in that we can look forward to the charms of winter – the sheen of autumn rain on leave litter, the thick greenness of the new grass, the rugged-upness of indoors during a thunderstorm, and of course, the excellent fashions (coats, scarves, gloves) now made tolerable by the drop in temperature.
Only one question remains: is there still something to do on these darker weekends? The answer, of course, is yes.
Today we have the fantastic Run for Life in Mount Maunganui fun run, organised by Tauranga physiotherapist Cath McFadyen and her husband Ian Thompson.
It offers the choice of a 5km run/walk, or 10km run, both starting at the Mount Surf Club, with all funds raised going towards supporting the PINC & STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Trust.
'PINC & STEEL provide cancer rehab services,” says Cath.
'They enable cancer sufferers and survivors to gain control, which is so important to improve pain, body image, continence – the list is endless. Cancer and its treatments can have negative side-effects, so the rehabilitation assists with improving functional gain and overall quality of life.”
The 10km run starts at 8.30am, while the 5km run/walk starts at 9.15am.
At Baycourt this afternoon the ‘Grumpy Old Women' return with a new show, ‘Game of Crones'.
Geraldine Brophy directs and stars with Linda Milligan and Julie Edwards in a ‘hilarious piece of fantasy', which is thankfully without nudity or real blood.
Show starts at 4pm, with tickets available from Ticketek.
Check out more of what's on below, and if you've forgotten all about daylight savings, watch the video for a helpful reminder as to how it works:
