Like many charity organisations in New Zealand, Coastguard runs on volunteer power.
If you've ever thought about volunteering for the charity organisation and want to learn more, Coastguard Thames is hosting an open day at the Thames Sailing Club on Tararu Road this Sunday.
A Coastguard Northern Region spokesperson says this weekend's open day is a great chance for people to chat with current volunteers about their work saving lives at sea.
'You don't need to have spent your life at sea, or need to donate countless hours. We need volunteers to fulfil all sorts of roles with varying amounts of commitment.
'No matter how much time you have to spare, whether its four hours or 40 hours a month, you're still able to make a difference and contribute to Coastguard's mission of saving lives at sea.”
As well as people who crew the rescue vessels, other volunteer roles with Coastguard include fundraising and administration, maintenance, safety checks, local events, unit visits, and local community group presentations.
'Each and every one of these roles plays a vital part in our ability to succeed in our mission.”
The Thames open day is one of several events focussing on recruiting more volunteers which will be taking place across Coastguard's northern region this Sunday.
Last year Coastguard Northern Region's 1019 volunteers dedicated 141,762 hours assisting more than 3997 boaties in need.
The Coastguard Thames Open Day takes place at the Thames Sailing Club on Tararu Road in Thames on Sunday, April 2, from 9:30am to 12:30pm.
