Truck crashes

Truckies are supposed to be professional drivers and yet day after day we read of yet another truck crash in the Tauranga area. There seems to be several problems with truck driver training and licensing. Trucks cost a lot of money - why are the drivers so careless with them? And what about the human cost of injury and deaths? More accountability required.

Professional drivers are humans too you know. They even make mistakes. The biggest dangers professional drivers face are other road users.... Who said this was the truck drivers fault? It says it is under investigation... Jaydeegee do you actually have a class 5 license? Im guessing by your comments that you dont as to get a class 5 license nowdays is difficult, time consuming and expensive. Not easy to get like a car license although we have to share the road with cars. Compared to car crashes there are few heavy vehicle crashes and out of those very few are caused by the heavy vehicle... The stats dont lie. You may wish to look them up before you comment.....

Truck incidents due to truck driver negligence are very low statistically, especially so with when the kilometres travelled are factored in. In this incident evidence suggests an unknown oil based substance on the road surface has been the contributor.

Granted the proportion of truck/heavy vehicle incidents may be lower than for other vehicles. But how do you explain the number of roll-overs, jack knifing, tree / bank / /bridge incidents? Surely these reflect driver error? Or will you try and blame some other factors given that there appears to be an increase in solo truck incidents? Murray Guy suggests that he knows what may have caused this latest incident, yet it is under investigation. If there was a slippery substance on the road, how come no other vehicles succumbed? Incidentally, I have a class 5 licence.

Our road / highway networks haven't kept pace with the growth of our region (or NZ), being far from 'fit for purpose' in many areas. Likewise our driver licencing and training falls woefully short of a responsible, appropriate approach by authorities to match todays traffic intensities and conditions. The sooner we have purpose built driver training facilities in all regions, the better! Penquin, increasingly the heavy vehicle driver is having to take critical action to avoid a cyclist on a bridge with on coming traffic (on a highway), having to brake heavily to enable a following car attempting to pass to succeed, having to change road/lane position to avoid an approaching vehicle over the centre line - issues always existed but more prevalent with greater traffic flows, increased frustration. Penquin, I said 'evidence suggests' oil or similar. I know as I felt it, and survived, minutes earlier.
