A section of the Mauao base track was closed for a couple of days this week to enable council contractors to safely clear debris from an overhanging slip face.

The slip happened some time ago, says city council parks and recreation manager Mark Smith.

'We identified there was a further risk of rockfall onto the base track.

'The good news is once we're aware of a slip we can manage that area to stop it from happening again. In this particular event, we brought in contractors to roll loose material down the hill in a controlled fall to avoid an uncontrolled slip.

'Afterward, the contractors clean up debris at the bottom and the track is safe and ready to use again.”

The base track re-opened about 3pm Wednesday.
