The New Zealand Transport Agency's spending $2.8 million dollars to fix a major blackspot on the Tauranga's roading system.
It's started building a roundabout at the intersection of Welcome Bay Road and Te Puke Highway.
Council's Transportation Infrastructure manager, Jim Paterson, says the roundabout is expected to significantly improve intersection safety for road users.
The road is now under the management of the Western Bay of Plenty District Council. And the council's transportation infrastructure manager, Jim Paterson says it will significantly improve intersection safety for road users.
'This section of road has a poor safety record and is ranked as a high risk intersection - having had a considerable number of crashes causing injury in the past.”
He says the roundabout design addresses all those concerns and should provide a safer experience for all.
Work on the roundabout is not expected affect road users until the middle of next month.
It's anticipated the roadworks will be completed by late July, with landscaping and finishing touches finished in early August.

Yeah Right! If this roundabout construction is anything like the (minor) changes to the roundabout at the intersection of SH29 and Route K, it will take until Christmas and cost at least $10 million on what is now basically a minor road - leave it as it is.
here we go again

Gosh this should have been done yrs ago, $2.8million that seems a lot to do that, suppose it cost that as they spend most of that on (CONS)ultants, all they needed to do was cut corner back, nothing wrong, with road, its something else,my thoughts only,Thanks No1 ,10-4 out.
Great move

I use this intersection daily, in both directions, and it's a terrible hazard. This is the most dangerous bit of road in my 1,000km weekly commute.
Idiots

To many idiots and impatient people is the trouble . This should be a good Road now with all the money they spent on the Te Puke bypass . They sure know how to waste money

The road itself is not the danger, as so often it's the idiot so-called "drivers" causing most of the problems!
absolutely stupid

Seems a bit excessive as the volume of traffic especially the trucks has dropped since the new road was opened. As many have said the road is fine ,its the idiots behind the wheel.
Keep o the limit

Might as well impede the traffic flow with a rounabout as everybody drives as slow as they can in this area.....
How about this simple idea?

....on the understanding that this is indeed an intersection "of interest"...what say we spend a little making the approach to Welcome Bay road from TePuke a little more "user friendly", but when exiting Welcome Bay road bound for Te Puke make it a compulsory left turn (cheese cutters are very popular and cost effective nowadays) back to the new roundabout 1 minute away and head back to Te Puke. At a saving of up to 2.8 million, an extra 2 mins (2km extra) is not much hardship is it?....maybe could free up some cash for improving the traffic flow into the City from Welcome Bay, which was almost backed up to the shops from Hairini at 8.30 this morning!
Well spotted, Groutby

Once again the little boys are going to waste megabucks, when a simple solution is obvious. They have stuffed up Te Puke - now this intersection?I don't think it is necessary!Compulsory Left turn, round the roundabout = problem solved!
