Mount Maunganui's next generation of surf lifesavers farewelled a beloved event and created a little bit of history on the last day of the Oceans 17 New Zealand under-14 championships yesterday.

The team from Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service showed nerves of steel on the final day to win their first Oceans crown in 14 years, collecting 56 points over the four days, 14 clear of defending champions Omanu, with the Waikanae club from Gisborne finishing third on 28.

It was Mount's fourth title in total, having won the first three Oceans events from 2001-03, and also capped a unique treble.

For the first time in history, one club holds the junior, senior and pool championship trophies, with Mount's senior team heading to Christchurch next week attempting their fifth successive Alan Gardner Trophy win and their seventh in the past eight years.

With the Oceans event controversially moving to Orewa next year, the hosts were determined to shine on a fourth straight day of sunshine and swell and they even managed to extend their lead after going in nine points ahead of Omanu and Waihi Beach.

Final day stars included Daniel Shanahan (under-14) and Tarquin Magner (under-13), who both won their surf race finals, with Shanahan completing a stellar Oceans career by winning the under-14 diamond race too. Jai Knight captured the under-12 boys board race crown, Mount Maunganui teams picked up silver in both the under-12 and under-14 Grand Cameron relays, while Zac Reeder won bronze in the under-13 diamond race.

Omanu's final-day charge came via a dramatic, come-from-behind under-14 Grand Cameron relay win, while Lucy Bartlett won the under-12 diamond race and picked up silver in the surf race and board race, and Molly Shivnan captured the under-14 board race crown.

Whangamata (fourth) and Waihi Beach's fifth-equal finish were among their best-ever results and capped strong performances from Eastern Region clubs.

Papamoa's Talitha McEwan helped her club into ninth overall, with twin wins in the under-11 surf race and diamond race, while Whakatane's Caitlyn Esterhuizen and Jamie Julian both won their respective under-11 board race finals to help their club finish 15th.

Final points: Mount Maunganui 56, Omanu 42, Waikanae 28, Whangamata 27, Maranui 26, Red Beach 26, Waihi Beach 26, Mairangi Bay 25, Papamoa 24, Lyall Bay 20.
