What’s On? Festivals & dragons

The 18th Tauranga Multicultural Festival at the Historic Village and a special screening of Pete’s Dragon at McLaren Falls Park are two of a number of awesome events on today. Supplied Photos.

Good morning Sunners, welcome to Saturday and the first day of the weekend for many of you.

MetService says it'll be mainly day with morning cloud and southwesterlies, so the weather's looking pretty good for the 18th Tauranga Multicultural Festival at the Historic Village today, and a seriously super special screening of Pete's Dragon at McLaren Falls Park this evening.

The Historic Village is springing into life again with colourful activities, cultural performances and community spirit for the 18th Multicultural Tauranga Festival, which opens at 10am.

Festival director Ann Kerewaro says it's a perfect means to demonstrate and celebrate Multicultural Tauranga's motto - promoting cultural diversity and harmony in the community.

Just like the 17 festival that have gone before, there'll be music and dance performances by various ethnic community groups, food stalls, a children's area to keep the little ones happy with a bouncy castle, face painting and other activities.

Plus, one lucky adult visitor is also going to win the main $250 spot prize offered by TSB Bank. For younger visitors, another $100 spot prize is waiting to be claimed.

The festival starts at 10am-4pm on Saturday, March 4. Entry is $6 for adults and $3 for children aged five to 16. For more information visit: www.trmc.co.nz

After you've had your festival fun, why not get the whanau together and head out to McLaren Falls Park for a special Disney's Pete's Dragon themed event, which includes an outdoor screening of the movie at the reserve's Top Flat.

Part of Tourism Bay of Plenty's ‘No Place Like Home' campaign, this free family-friendly event which is the first of its kind for the local reserve is being presented in partnership with Night Owl Cinemas and Waimarino.

This afternoon Waimarino will run Waka Tours, host a Holiday and After-School programme tent with free dragon-themed face painting, plus the glow worm kayak tour will also be operating, with bookings in advance necessary.

The Falls Café will also be open later than usual, giving movie goers a chance to wander along the scenic lakeside track to the café and information centre for a bite to eat and a hot chocolate.

There will also be food trucks and entertainment from local musicians pre-screening, organised by Night Owl Cinema.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council has come on board to facilitate a free park and ride service from the park equestrian area to Top Flat where the action will be happening.

The event commences at 3pm and will conclude at 10pm, with the film screening at 8pm when the sun goes down. For more information visit www.facebook.com/nightowlcinema or www.bayofplentynz.com/events
