Aussie cruise ship visitor denied entry

Emerald Princes is a regular visitor around the New Zealand coast.

An Australian cruise ship passenger has been denied entry into New Zealand on arrival in Dunedin.

A number of police officers greeted the Emerald Princess when it arrived in Otago on Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for the Immigration Department says an Australian cruise passenger had been referred to it and was denied entry into the country on "character grounds" following an interview.

"For privacy and legal reasons INZ can make no further comment.”

The Emerald Princess cruiseliner made headlines twice in February, with an Australian crew member dying in a gas canister explosion on February 9 and again after a woman had to be winched off the ship due to illness later in the month.

The ship, which can carry more than 3000 passengers, departed for Fiordland on Wednesday evening.
