New layout for city intersection

The Fraser Street / 18th Avenue intersection will be compleely transformed by the end of the month. Image: TCC.

As part of its road safety programme, Tauranga City Council is making some changes to the intersection of Fraser Street and 18th Avenue.

Council says the changes are designed to improve the safety of turning vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at this intersection.

A new median island is being installed at the intersection along Fraser Street. Right hand turns at this intersection will no longer be possible, except for traffic coming from Tauranga Intermediate School on 18th Avenue which will continue to be able to turn right onto Fraser Street.

Traffic management will be in place during the construction but two-way traffic will remain throughout the works. The works are expected to be completed by the end of this week, in time for the first day back to school on Tuesday January 31.

Some half wit has designed something that's going to cost a hell of a lot of money This will add to the problems , maybe they should put another flyover in

A far more elegant solution would be to remove the speed humps in Grace road and make the North turn exit from the intermediate through the 17th Avenue intersection with Fraser Street. Make the 18th ave intersection left turn only. The worst problem is the arrogant idiot bus drivers bringing kids from from the intermediate turning right, they push out further and further until the road is blocked in both directions and then drive off laughing leaving the carnage behind them . No doubt all this has been driven by the bus companies lobbying council...It certainly is not favoured by the local residents....but then TCC couldn't care less about the locals....I bet they end up changing it , just like the bus stops etc that they were told about at Fraser and Chadwick.

Well

Put all that money into free bus transport. Traffic has been atrocious since charging school students bus fees.

waste of money

does this mean that 13th, 14th, a6th, 17th etc are all going to have realignment as there is no difference between 18th Ave and other Avenues entering Fraser St. More waste of money, hang on its our money but council just seem to have money to burn

Ummm ...

Wouldn't it just have been easier, and cheaper, to put in traffic lights ?

You are way wide of the mark, the voted Councillors have NOTHING to do with the way the council laws/bylaws are implemented on a day to day basis. The inept management and useless graduates with no idea, make these stupid unworkable moneywasting decisions. The perpetrators of this "artwork" probably don't even hold a drivers license, ( they all ride bikes if the current fad of turning all the wide straight streets of Tauranga into narrow winding laneways is anything to go by.)

No change matters

I travel this road most days during peak times and none of these changes will make any difference whatsoever. Why? The ignorance and inconsideration of drivers travelling on Fraser toward 15th ave that absolutely refuse to touch their brake pedal and create a gap for right turning traffic to safely make it. I have waited to turn right into 17th ave and counted as many as 50 cars and waited up to 6 minutes to make the turn due to no-one considering me. They even look the other way when doing this so they know what they are doing. I am stuck in the middle of the road with traffic passing me and these inconsiderate Bas***ds do not give a toss because they may add a whole 5 seconds to their journey. PS The bus drivers normally DO let me turn. Thanks guys and I do the same foryou.
