The Thames-Coromandel District Council is inviting the Whitianga community to Tsunami Open Day this long weekend.

The open day is a chance for the community to learn more about what council understands to be the tsunami threat to Whitianga and takes place at the Whitianga Town Hall on Saturday.

A council spokesperson says they're holding the open day on the Saturday of the upcoming Auckland Anniversary Weekend to ensure as many residents as possible can attend.

'You'll be able to talk directly with the tsunami scientists, hazard specialists and emergency managers that have worked on this project.

'We're also keen to hear what you think should be the approach to managing the tsunami risk in these areas.”

More specifically, council wants to know what locals think about such things like the emergency management procedures that should be adopted and the community education approach that should be undertaken

Council is also keen to learn what locals think about coastal land use planning, such as restricting the location of facilities like kindergartens or rest homes being built in potential tsunami inundation paths.

The Tsunami Open Day takes place at the Whitianga Town Hall on Monk Street this Saturday, January 28, from 9.30am-3.30pm.
