It was a fiery scene for some beach goers yesterday with a barbecue fire at the base of Mount Drury.

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade was called to Mount Drury on Oceanbeach Road after a gas bottle caught on fire just before 3pm.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says the bottle ignited and the flames spread to the tent.

'The fire was extinguished and the scene was left in the hands of a council rep.”

There were no reports of injuries and firefighters managed to get the blaze under control quickly.

A witness to the fire says traffic was held up for a few hours as the fire and subsequent scene was dealt with.
