Car off road on SH29 near Tauranga

UPDATED 1.50PM: A woman has been transported to hospital following a crash on State Highway 29 near Tauranga.

Sergeant Adrian Tukaki says the 57-year-old woman was a passenger in the SUV that had been towing a caravan at the time when the vehicle lost control and left the road shortly before 12pm.

'For unknown reasons at this stage the vehicle has lost control which has cause the car to go down the bank.”

The woman, who is in a wheelchair, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire staff, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru told SunLive earlier.

The woman has since been transported to Tauranga Hospital but was unable to confirm the severity of her injuries. It is also unclear whether the male driver suffered any injuries as a result f the crash.

Andrian says traffic in and around Tauranga is 'hideous” and he's imploring all motorists to take extra care when travelling on the roads today.

'If you're towing anything make sure to double check your equipment and please drive safely.”

EARLIER 12:55PM:

One person has been extricated from a vehicle which crashed down a bank on State Highway 29 near Tauranga.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says the crash occurred between Omanawa and Ruahihi roads shortly before 12pm.

'The person who was trapped in the vehicle was in a wheelchair but she has now been extricated.

'Fire crews are still at the scene helping with traffic management.”

Motorists are being advised SH29 is open but delays are possible due to the crash.

EARLIER:

Emergency services are currently responding to a vehicle crash on State Highway 29 in the Lower Kaimai.

A police spokesperson says two people are trapped in a vehicle which has driven off the road and gone down a bank near Omanawa Road.

Fire and ambulance are also at the scene.

The spokesperson says the vehicle occupants will need to be extricated from the vehicle by fire staff, but is unable to confirm at this stage if anyone sustained injuries as a result of the crash.

A section of SH29 will be closed while emergency services respond to the incident.

Police were notified of the crash shortly after 12pm.
