The Waikorire track to the summit of Mauao reopened today after helicopter work to repave and widen the track.
The Waikorire track was closed by Tauranga City Council from December 5. The Oruahine track was also closed while helicopter work was ongoing, but reopened mid-last week.
The heavy lift helicopter flew more than 255 tonnes of gravel onto the track, taking about 180 trips to move the materials.
Eighteen flights of steps were also renewed during the week to allow for better two-way access.
'The Waikorire is Mauao's most popular track – it's been used nearly 700,000 times so far in 2016 – and it should now be safer and easier for walkers and runners to use,” says Tauranga City Council parks and recreation manager, Warren Aitken.
The summit has been visited more than 807,000 times so far this year.
