An even bigger supermoon

This month's supermoon will be even bigger than last month's. Photo: Emma Kapua.

The November full moon on the 14th is the biggest, closest and brightest supermoon of the year. It is the closest supermoon since January 1948 and it won't come as close again until November 2024.

A supermoon is a perigee full moon, when the moon is full while closest to earth in its elliptical orbit. There are three this year, the Full moons of last month, this month and next month.

This month's full moon is even more super than last month's or next months because the moon is fullest, while closest, a mere 356,509km away from the planet. The full moon moment is at 1356 UTC, or 2.30am NZ daylight saving time.

The November 2034 supermoon will be closer at 356,446km. The closest full moon of the 21st century will be on December 6, 2052 at 356,425 km distance. Astronomy websites are full of such details.

The full moon of January 14 1930 was closer, only 356,397km from earth, but it won't be within 356,400km of the planet again until January 2257.

Bu comparison the moon's furtherest distance from earth for year was on the October 31, at 406,662 kilometers.

Closest full moons happen every 14 lunar months, or 15 returns or perigee. It takes about one year, one month and 18 days.

Supermoons bring the highest and lowest tides. On the day of the full moon each month the moon, Earth and sun are aligned, with Earth in between. The line up creates wide-ranging tides, known as spring tides. High spring tides climb up especially high, and on the same day low tides are especially low.

Astrologically the full moon weather forecast is a mixed bag with one astrologer warning any fame will come with a certain amount of notoriety, and that the period is good for those who can make a career out of doom and gloom.

There are also warnings about the pain that comes with such a sensitive moon seeing many tempted to self medicate with drink and or drugs, that depression can be a problem, as could a tendency to self destruction – that some might feel their lives are fated even cursed for the next two weeks.

Life gets better as the Moon wanes, apparently.
