There are concerns a pack of dogs may be wandering Papamoa by night.
When night shift worker Paul van der Werff got home on Tuesday morning his chook run had been broken into, there was a carpet of feathers and his six hens had gone.
The crime scene. All that's left of Paul's egg factory.
'Must have been dogs. I can't imagine any other animal could have done it. Cats wander through but they ignore the chooks.”
And there must have been more than one dog because there was no carcasses – no bodies. There were feathers from each of the chooks – two Black Orpingtons, one Red Shaver, one White Leghorn and one Isabella Leghorn.
The hens had all been carried off up the street where there was a trail of feathers.
'I tracked them for a couple of hundred metres but then they ran out.”
Paul's source of eggs has also run out.
'I took a load to work last night and gave them to the guys. Now I will have to start buying eggs.”
Paul says his wife was home all night and didn't hear anything. He called Animal Control about the attack on his chook run who have 'helped me set up a trap”.
Paul asks if anyone sees any survivors in the Papamoa Beach Road/Alexander Street area then give him a call on 021 990155. And animal control would probably like to hear from anyone who sees the dogs wandering at night.

Any roaming dog should be immediately impounded with no excuses. The owners should be fined $1000 and banned from further dog ownership.
dogs or people?

So a dog opened the cage gate, killed 6 hens before any had a chance to escape, left no remains except feathers so somehow carried 6 hens (maybe in a back pack) back to wherever he/she came from without being heard or seen? My money would be on some low life human thief helping themselves to free chicken!

Agree with Benny. Blaming dogs is clucking at straws. This is hen rustling for sure and by someone who knew you had them. Technically it is burglary and as that is now a priority you should expect/demand that it is thoroughly investigated. If not, email Judith Collins and ask why not.
