Whiti locals urged to save water

Whitianga locals are being urged to conserve water while important maintenance work is carried out on the town's water treatment plant this Wednesday.

Water will be supplied from the town's back-up reservoir storage while the treatment plant is shut down from 3pm to 4pm tomorrow, advises The Thames-Coromandel District Council.

'The reservoirs will be full prior to shut down and should be sufficient to maintain water needs for the duration of the maintenance works under normal expected consumption,” explains council.

'However, users are requested to conserve water all day on Wednesday in case of any unexpected delays.”

Typical water use in the home is 25 per cent in the bathroom, 25 per cent in the kitchen, 30 per cent for toilet flushing and 20 per cent for outdoors, says council.

'So there are water saving opportunities everywhere.”

SOME HANDY WATER SAVING IDEAS:

  • Now's a good time to fix that leaky tap!
  • Fill the sink to wash vegetables and rinse dishes
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
  • Have a shorter shower or shallower bath
  • Only do a full load if you have to use the dishwasher or washing machine
  • Delay any car washing
  • Use a bucket to wash the boat
