Road closures for Olympians

Devonport Road and The Strand will be closed from 11am to 12.30pm tomorrow Friday, as Tauranga celebrates the Bay of Plenty's Olympic wins.

The Strand will be closed from Spring Street to Harington Street for the event, while Devonport Road will operate a rolling road closure from Third Avenue through to the turn onto The Strand.

NZ Gold medallistsBlair Tuke and Peter Burling will be walking in the parade tomorrow with fellow Tauranga Olympians.

The bay end of Second Avenue to the corner of Devonport Road will also be closed from 10.30am to 11am in preparation for the parade.

Starting from 11am, the Tauranga Olympics Parade will make its way down Devonport Road and The Strand before ending at Wharf Street.

The parade will include: gold medallists and NZ flag bearers Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (sailing); silver medallists Molly Meech and Alex Maloney (sailing); silver medallist Luuka Jones (slalom canoe); bronze medallist Sam Meech (sailing); and Olympian Jason Saunders (sailing).

It will be followed by a short ceremony at Edgewater Fan, where speeches will be made by the athletes and Mayor Stuart Crosby.

The parade is a great opportunity to celebrate the success of local athletes, says Tauranga City Council communications manager Amy Driscol.

'We get to honour our Olympic heroes – these are people that have worked really hard to represent their region, community and country.”

This year's Olympic Games in Rio were noteworthy for Tauranga athletes, with half of all New Zealand medals belonging to Olympians born or raised in the Bay of Plenty.

Their success means a lot for all Bay athletes, says Amy.

'It gives them something to aspire to, that they can be successful on the world stage.”

Large crowds are expected for the parade tomorrow, and the public is advised to consider using public transport to avoid traffic congestion.

In the event of wet weather, the celebrations will be held at Baycourt Exhibition Space.
