Alcohol fuelled trio of crashes

Three drivers are appearing in Tauranga District Court on excess alcohol charges following a trio of crashes on Tauranga roads.

Police were called to crash at 8.12pm on Welcome Bay Road, near Waitaha Road, where a vehicle had been travelling on Welcome Bay Road, lost control and ended up nose first in the estuary.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the driver was located a short time later and alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor to the crash.

The driver was arrested and is due to appear in court this morning.

Ian says there were two other alcohol related crashes yesterday, which is disappointing.

Alcohol was a contributing factor in a 7am crash at the intersection of Cameron Road and Fifth Avenue.

Ian says it was a non-injury crash involving three vehicles.

'It's scary that they are out that at that time of the morning sharing the road with you and I and our families.

'It is just very disappointing. Alcohol related crashes are on the decline in this area and to have three in one day is very disappointing.”

The driver of the vehicle that crashed through a fence in Clarke Street at 3.48pm will also be appearing in Tauranga District Court today on a drink driving charge.

A justice system that seems to think repeated warnings and stern finger wagging will do the trick. May have worked 50 years ago.

I understand the thoughts...

...but surely we know by now and complete ban on alcohol ( or any type of "brain impairment" substance) will simply NOT make a jot of difference to the dickheads who are going to do it anyway...more likelehood of being caught and seriously harsher penalties would surely be beneficial..more personal responsibility would stop it happening in the first place!

Be nice if it was moved soon

Its already been trashed with kids jumping on it. Saw it today. Will cause a crash soon with the traffic slamming on their brakes & swerving to see it better. Seen it happen twice today. Monday morning will be a nightmare.
