Wave buoy back at sea

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council's wave buoy is back at sea ready to share its watery insights into wave heights passing its position 13km off Pukehina Beach.

Wave heights, water temperature and wave frequency are measured by the buoy and the data transmitted to shore and shared live on the regional council website.

The regional council's wave buoy.

The buoy has been out of the water since March getting a new computer installed and other internal upgrades.

Regional Council's Data Services Manager Glenn Ellery says the necessary parts came all the way from Canada and everything went to plan.

'We have tested that everything is working with the new internals and all the signs are good. While it was out of the water, we gave the hull of the buoy a once-over but it was in good condition for its age and no significant maintenance was needed.”

The wave buoy data is back online at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council's live monitoring site.

Why do we need all this vtal data for. Would the sun come up tomorrow and life go on if we did not have it?

It's quite simple Kenworthlogger. I'm sure you check the weather forecast before you head out on the road. This buoy would provide information (swell, significant wave height, wind direction and speed, etc) to boaties who are potentially heading out to see. Much like the one at A-Buoy I would imagine. Not exclusively for the council. So ask yourself, do we need weather and roading reports or will the sun come up and life go on anyway?
