Flooding chaos in Katikati

UPDATED: Flooding and slips are affecting a number of state highways around the region.

NZ Transport Agency says State Highway 2, near Katikati, is now open to one after being closed to allow contractors to remove a truck, which slid off the road earlier this morning.

Due To deep flooding, SH2, near Lindermann Road, is reduced to one lane.

"A stop/go management is in place," says the NZTA.

Emergency services are on site and motorists are being warned of possible delays in the area.

One lane in the Karangahake Gorge is also closed following a slip.

A reporter in the area says traffic is still able to drive through the area.

Earlier:

'The guys had to recover a truck that crashed in the flood water. So there'll be some contractors going out there to salvage the truck and get it out of the water,” says a NZTA spokesperson.

But because it's high tide around 9am, it's likely the road is going to be closed for a bit longer because the water will rise.

'Police are managing traffic through the site. But when that closure's in place they won't be.

During the closure, motorists should be using the alternative route such as SH27.”

'If it does get worse in terms of flooding down there only 4WD and trucks will be able to get through. They will be managed by police so there will be delays.”

More flooding in the Katikati area.

The NZ Transport Agency advises Coromandel and Bay of Plenty motorists to drive with extra care and expect delays today.

Traffic management including 30km/h speed restrictions and lane closures are in place in some areas.

· A 100 metre section of State Highway 2 between Philip Water Drive and Lindemann Road, just north of Katakati is underwater and one lane is currently closed. Police are managing traffic through the site. Light vehicles are advised to use an alternative route such as SH27. 4WDs and trucks will be managed through the site but people should expect delays. The Transport Agency says the road will be closed between 9am and 10am today to allow a truck to be salvaged from floodwaters, and there is a possibility that due to the high tide the closure may be extended.

· State Highway 25 is closed just south of Whitianga due to flooding.

· State Highway 25 between the SH25A intersection and Tairua is closed due to flooding

· SH25a near Kirikiri Valley Road is down to one lane due to a slip. Stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions are in place.
