Fishing competition nets hospice $4000

Waipuna Hospice is this year's recipient of $4000 raised at the annual Western Bay of Plenty Services Fishing Competition.
The competition, organised by Western Bay police, attracts more than 200 participants.

Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae is delighted to receive a $4000 donation from Tauranga Senior Sergeant Ross Bielby.

Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae says the donation is fantastic.
'It's always difficult for us to raise the $1.5 million we need to operate every year.
'It's more daunting because of the economic conditions and the flooding earlier this year.”
The hospice was hit by severe flooding after a storm hit the region on January 29.
Nine hospice vehicles were damaged, along with equipment and furniture.
A total of $6000 was raised at the Western Bay of Plenty Services Fishing Competition, held on April 11-13.
Senior Sergeant Ross Bielby says $2000 was donated to Christchurch.
Funds from the competition are raised from the sale of crayfish caught and through individual donations.
Trish says the donation will make a big difference.
'We've had a lot of strain on our resources. To receive something like this is even more welcomed because of the challenges we face.”
Hospice Awareness Week is May 16-22. During this period people shopping at New World or Pak'n'Save can add $1 or more to their grocery bill, with that money going to Waipuna Hospice.
An opportunity to have tea with Dilmah Tea national manager Nigel Scott is also being organised for May 18. Contact Waipuna Hospice for more information.
