Western Bay of Plenty seniors support organisations are rejecting Winston Peters' plans to give a 10 per cent power discount to those aged over 65.
The discount would be incorporated as part of the benefits of the existing Super Gold Card.
Winston Peters.
Winston announced the New Zealand First policy at Grey Power's annual general meeting in Hamilton on Sunday.
Tauranga Age Concern chairperson Angela Scott says New Zealand cannot afford the scheme.
'We are aware that people do have problems with their electricity bills,” says Angela.
'In the present financial climate it's not a situation that's going to be available.”
Instead, Angela urges Western Bay of Plenty elderly to ensure their homes are properly insulated.
'People should look at having the most efficient heat and cooking systems.
'The difficulty is that people are scared of what the bill might be.
'They try not to use power, but we do need to keep homes sufficiently warmed so we keep in good health.”
Western Bay of Plenty Grey Power spokesperson Lynne Morrison says home heating is important.
'I support the idea of cheaper power, but I don't like Winston Peters,” says Lynne.
She was the only person in the organisation able to comment because president Doug Wilson was in hospital after a 'collapse” and vice president Brian Pitts resigned his position.
Winston told Grey Power delegates during the announcement of his proposed scheme that it would be based on the average annual units used by married couples and singles and be operating by winter 2012.
'Of course, we won't be paying to heat swimming pools or to run the family factory from grandma's place, but we believe that cold damp houses are a health risk to senior citizens.
'The cost of electricity has gone up at least 10 per cent since last winter and we hear too many reports of older people unable to afford power bills or are too scared to turn a heater on.”

I suspect this lady is spouting her own opinion and not that of the majority of senior citizens whether or not they belong to Age Concern. I take it that goes for the Greypower spokesperson as well, as I assume this organisation is apolitical which should mean that Ms Morrison's personal likes and dislikes are totally irrelevant.
How *DUMB* is that

One woman says it can't be afforded & people should make sure their homes are insulated and they use efficient heating. The people that need the relief can not afford any of that. *DUMB* The other lady likes the idea but not Winnie ..I am sure your opinion is more important lady than the benefit many would get from a rebate..*DUMB* Must be said that at least Winnie is a trier and worker for our "mature" citizens. More than the inexperienced chimp we have at the moment. Tell me what he has done or is doing for the good ole Kiwi Battler. N Barker

The community workers quoted in this story who can clearly see NZ has a problem should be commended for their honesty and for not falling for the me first politics of those seeking election to government.

Winston announced this in the weekend and these people are speaking for their organisations before they have had a chance to meet. This is the way NZ is going minority groups speaking for the masses. I think his idea is great but is the country able to afford it, and from what I have read he has not yet divulge where the money is coming from. We need to wait before knocking.
More bribery

Winston thinks he can buy us. He thinks if he bribes us with these silly ideas we will vote for him. How demeaning.
Not as *dumb* as this.

Failing to plan for your 'golden years' so that you can at least support yourself without relying on the taxpayer and other handouts. *dumber*. Not knowing or being open to the idea that a chairperson or spokesperson for an organisation may represent the opinion of more than just themselves. *dumber*. Expecting more handouts from a government in deficit and during a recession. *dumber*. Not realising by now that Winston will say anything to 'buy' your vote and not follow through with it once elected. *dumber* Being so blinded by your 'ageist' attitude that you can't see that Simon is doing better than anyone so far. *dumber*. Blaming everyone else and not taking responsibility for your own situation. *dumber*.
Good thought wrong plan

Peters has the right idea and is on the right track but his proposal is wrong .You have to find another vehicle to get the help to those in need.Things like TCC rate increases of 11.4% are the real problem and this is what you need to cull out.
National Concerned

Sounds like the National Party supporters are trying to undermine Winston. There is a lot in this town that is here because of Winston and the National Party has had to continue to support what Winston started. Road infrastructure and schools that have benefited all who live in the Bay. The elderly throughout the country have much through the Gold Card scheme alone. If Labour and National had not sold our nations assets such as Telecommunications,Transport and energy projects we would be in the position to offer the Golden ones lower power, phone and travel in their Golden years. Every time Labour and National sell off our Nations assets built and paid for by the Golden ones, it is to reduce National debt, a feat neither party has succeeded in achieving and in fact have only managed to increase the nations debt. As far as the Golden boy Simon he is an apprentice without a tradesman to guide him. The tradesman is too busy on helicopter rides with his entourage trying to emulate a rock star. By the time Kiwis wake up the best of NZ will be sold at bargain prices to his mates and he will be back with his co conspirators in the USA being hailed by Sony for introducing laws the Communists would have only dreamed of.
NZ Old People First?
Posted on 10-05-2011 12:42 | By Gringo
Why is it that Winston Peters is so Obsessed with helping old people? Why is an old persons health worth any more than anyone else's? They haven't paid anywhere near as much tax as the current generations will have to. Perhaps Winston Peters should start a new party called 'The Old People First Party' Tax breaks to the Old is robbing peter to pay paul (Thats your grandchildren old people).

Yes very clever, and I agree. However, Some people never learn from their mistakes, regardless of age. These are the people that usually need help in society; young, old, black, white, whatever.

Get up to speed "The Government has also raised the possibility of partial asset sales" which assets do you think they are talking about? The Clyde Dam, New Zealand's third largest hydroelectric dam. It is owned and operated by Contact Energy. The company is the second-largest electricity generator in New Zealand. The Australian energy company Origin Energy holds a 51% shareholding in Contact Energy.

Hey Gringo It's ones earning capacity that dictates what one can afford (including power), Oldies have paid their taxes- admittedly not us much as people now in employment, but neither was their income. What may have appeared to be a comfortable superannuation package 10/15 years ago sure isn't now .If you are so concerned that oldies should not be the only ones to be warm and comfortable, bring in a means test.but don't forget to include money spent on lotto pokies TAB & the pub

Gringo- this man targets the older people because the younger generation have got his measure and would not vote for him anyway- they can see right through him and his silver tongue
