Serious injuries in head-on crash

Two people have been flown to Tauranga Hospital following a head-on crash in the Bay this morning.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter as dispatched to the crash, 7km south of Waihau Bay, on State Highway 35, after two cars crashed head-on.

“The driver of one of the cars received serious abdominal injuries in the crash and was flown to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition,” says pilot and base manager Liam Brettkelly.

“The driver of the second car received chest injuries and he also was transported on the same flight to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition.”

The remaining patients from both cars were taken by St John ambulance to Whakatane Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police are investigating the crash.
