Parking workshops continue

A review of time limits on Tauranga's central city parking is to be undertaken following this week's workshop on central city parking issues.
Tauranga City Council transportation manager Martin Parkes says there are also requests for the council to consider free parking at weekends and to revive the free buses on Saturdays.

The workshop was attended by city councillors, city council transportation staff, industry professionals, the chamber of commerce, the Property Council and city centre action group.
Tauranga Mainstreet manager Kirby Weis called for the workshop in January as he was concerned councillors were under unrealistic pressure to make a decision on CBD parking. The two issues facing the decision makers are the city's requirement to maintain the parking meter income to help pay off the city's debt and the CBD business operators' concerns that high parking fees will drive away customers.
'There's always been an issue with retailers not liking the fact that some of their customers have to pay for their parking,” says Martin.
'I'm not sure if that's true or not; there are still a lot of people coming into town for their shopping.”
'There's quite a lot of stuff being discussed, some needs more work and bringing back to the group to work through again.
The workshops' outcomes will be presented to council's public meeting process for decision making.
