Te Puke arson investigation

Arson is being put down as the cause of a fire which tore through a Rangiuru home.

An investigation in the Monday afternoon fire is underway as police and fire safety officers examine the scene this morning.

Firefighters battled a blaze which completely destroyed a house in Rangiuru. File photo.

Te Puke Detective Sergeant Trevor Brown says the fire is suspicious.

'It is definitely arson. We are talking to several people that were at the address yesterday.”

Trevor says the investigation is in its early stages and police may have more information later today.

No one was home when the single storey wooden building was seen on fire about 3.30pm. Three fire trucks from Te Puke attended, along with water tankers from Greerton and Te Puke.

McMeeking Road is a cul-de -ac a kilometre or so up Rangiuru Road.

There was no one home at the house when the fire started and it was well ablaze by the time Te Puke firefighters arrived.

They extinguished the fire, but the house burned to the ground. A car parked near the house was also destroyed in the fire.

Two people are understood to live in the house, but were not home when the blaze started.
