Only four yachts crossed the finish line in this year's Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race. Difficult sea conditions and a serious lack of wind forced most crews to withdraw on the first day.
'We have had similar conditions once before,” says race organiser Graham Vincent, 'but not this bad. By the end of day one all Auckland yachts had pulled out.”

While the wind was howling on Thursday, the yachts found themselves without enough wind to compete pretty soon after the start.
Only Team Vodafone sailed into a light breeze, coming out of the Hauraki Gulf. It was enough for them to make Tauranga within the specified time.
Three other yachts, Timewarp, Open Country and General Jackson, eventually made it across the finish line.
Because the yachts that withdrew decided to motor back home, the prize giving did not have as many people present as in previous years. Those that were there made the most of it.
'There was a great atmosphere at the after race function and those that won got great prizes, such as high powered torches and life jackets,” says Graham.
