Single mum Sian Gulliford works hard to provide for her little boy Luca – sometimes working 10-hour days at a local café in Mount Maunganui.
She was recently surprised when she got a call from PORSE, the early childhood education centre where her son attends, saying she had won $4000 or a $5000 trip to the Gold Coast.
Sian Gulliford with her son Luca.
'It was overwhelming,” says Sian.
Because of her hours, Sian needed flexible and reliable childcare, because she needed to drop Luca off at 6.30 each morning.
Earlier this year she found PORSE educator Kelly Veen, who was everything she was looking for and was prepared to do the early start.
At the time PORSE was running a promotion for parents who enrolled. Sian entered the draw and never gave it another thought, until recently when she received the exciting news.
'I couldn't believe it! I got a call to say I had won $4000 or a $5000 trip to the Gold Coast. It was so overwhelming,” says Sian.
'I have never won anything in my life so to win such a big prize was awesome.”
Sian opted to take the money because she is saving to buy her first house.
'The money went straight into my savings bank account, so I'm very happy.”
PORSE consultant Vicki Nimmo says she's happy someone as deserving as Sian won the prize.
'Sian works so hard and is bringing little Luca up on her own, with the help of Kelly, so it's great to see the money will be put to good use and will help Sian buy her first home.”

Well deserved! Just what I like to hear, a working mother being rewarded. Congratulations.

I also support your decision to save rather than holiday. Shame so many selfish greedy needy people get off on stock piling property so as to make it unaffordable for you and thousands of others. New release affordable (supposedly) sections houses are being consumed by the mentioned instead of being excluded and research done to See if these properties are in fact reaching those who actually qualify. Time for a change. Paula Bennett was a receipant of labours baby boomer housing look at Dixon road for eg. Back in the eighties. So apart from greed immigrants ignorance nothing has changed apart from those now telling us how to live. Good thing cotton not as expensive as land can't imagine what Bennett would present like gross . A small lifestyle block perhaps.

Sounds like you have a case of sour grapes. You'd be better off targeting council/govt and their smartgrowth policies.Insufficient land is being released for development which pushes up section prices. And, council charges over 30 thousand dollars before even swinging a hammer on a new house build. Just because someone buys a house does not mean they are greedy.

Sour grapes maybe but regardless of how much or little land is released it still does nothing to deter the Volture attitude of some. Yes I to own my own home but still I have not lost sight of the bigger picture, because I am a home owner doesn't give me or anyone the right to swindle out first home buyers simply because you can. If your lucky enough to have children you might have an idea of what my view is about unless you are one of the mentioned?. We want our children to have goals a job, car, house, family, independence, not welfare, bus, community shelter, Wow my poor kids such huge expectations . Huge when people swallow up these houses for greed is my point, yes we are assisting our kids into a home but they still have to pay for it. Simple enuf?.

Home ownership is completely different from house collecting.

There is a rental shortage on at the moment. That means not enough rentals have been purchased for people that rent so there will be people living in tents and cars etc. Private landlords provide housing for people. Nothing like sour grapes ah mate....
Good on you

Great to hear that this lady has won something and put the money to good use. I have sole parented myself and managed to buy my own home while working full time. It isn't easy Sian but try to focus on the bigger picture and the end result, and I hope that you will get there, because you deserve it.
Very wise..

Are you serious?. There have been and currently more people entering NZ than there are completed houses let alone what the country could sustain before hand. This is the issue. Nothing to do with private investment or shortage of rentals is a shortage of AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION NATION WIDE. Government portraying NZ as a FREE FOR ALL. Refugees get a better start here than the average NZdr and they are GIVEN A HOUSE . Guess your all for that too ? .

Out of how many ?. Yes more power to that lady and her success. Pity hard work didn't make you more intellectual then you may the gist of my comments. Majority of people work hard to get ahead just not all share the same successes. Typically one person does well so thats the bar for all regardless of background or earning potential. Got a sticker your my lunch box hero.
