Tauranga City Council staff are looking for the owner of a derelict fishing boat in danger of sinking at its berth at the former slip jetties.
The Green Pastures was abandoned some years ago by its owner, now believed to be overseas, says council property manager Antony Averill.
The fishing boat Green Pastures.
Since then, Green Pastures has begun leaking. A pump was installed and connected to shore power, but recently the water has come in faster.
The council is now forced to act as it is faced with the prospect of the Green Pastures sinking at her berth.
An earlier attempt found the Green Pastures too heavy to lift using a crane. Metal ballast, fittings and the engine are being removed so it can be lifted out of the water.
"Someone offered to tow it away, but we got the impression it was going to be dumped," says Anthony.
There are many people who think they have an interest in Green Pastures, says Anthony, but none who is prepared to pay any part of the berthage bill, which is now more than Green Pastures is worth.
The Green Pastures is expected to be lifted onto the hard in about a week.
"I want it gone to be honest so we can put another customer on the berth, but I would like someone to account for the arrears," says Anthony.
