Tauranga city councillors make their decision whether to sell historic village land for the project tomorrow.
The council is to decide whether to sell 4790m2 of the Village Green to TECT for a two storey building plus parking, for accommodating volunteer and community groups.
Councillors are expected to release their decision about the sale of Historic Village land tomorrow.
TECT proposes to build a $10 million community hub on the land – a shared working space for community organisations with flexible spaces; support from wrap-around services such as business advice and marketing; and opportunities for community organisations to collaborate with each other.
The decision, which was to have been made on February 22, but was delayed while the council obtained more information on costs relating to the project.
The land at the village green is swampy and bringing it up to standard to support a two storey building will be at the cost of the Tauranga City council.
TECT chairman Bill Holland acknowledged in November 2015 when TECT originally pitched the proposal, that there are drainage issues with the land.
'I didn't realise it's a damn swamp,” says Bill. 'There's a spring there. I didn't realise that. I often wondered why it wasn't used more often and the answer is it is wet, too wet to sit on.”
There is an engineering solution, says Bill, and TECT obtained a report saying building the proposed two story building on site will cost, but it can be done.
'We have said at the outset we will pay what it's worth, less what it costs to make it worth what it is,” says Bill.
Tuesday's discussion will start at around 2.30pm.
The staff recommendation in the agenda is to support the development.
Feedback from community consultation and engagement indicates general support for the proposal. Of 97 responses received, 76 support the proposal; 17 are against it and 4 gave no answer or were indifferent.

Watch this space rate-payers, you will be paying for the remedial work so Tect can have their hub. Flick it cheaper if necessary because the idiots at Town hall will bungle the figures.

Our Historical Buildings are lovely and an asset to our city, to put a modern building there would not fit in . The most terrible part of Tect wanting to move there is they want to cut down that beautiful Tree!
TECT want - TECT pay!

If TECH want to erect their modern eyesore of a building amongst our historic treasures, the least they can do is to reclaim the 'swamp' they want to build it on!! They are not short on money but by God the ratepayers are!!
At what Cost?

Quote "The land at the village green is swampy and bringing it up to standard to support a two storey building will be at the cost of the Tauranga City council. What do you bet that the cost of 'bringing it up to standard' will be more than what TECT pay the council for the land! ??
Huh!!!!!

Bill you and your family have lived in this city for "eons", and you did not know the land was a swamp?, get out of town, what a absolutely stupid statement, and even so before any proposal was mooted, basic practice would have you doing a due diligence report, what the hell is going on here?, if you want to buy it go ahead and pay a value that ratepayers agree with, don't start trying to de value the land now, something stinks and it ain't the bloody swamp, the absolute best outcome would have been to put the new Police Station and all emergency services down there with a slip road onto the expressway, then a multi cultural centre could have been built on Monmouth/Cliff road, but nah that would require vision.
Why?

Why would council drain it for TECT and if they so still want a museum not do it for a Museum as this would be the ideal place for such!
Dad, the TECT building

DAD, the TECT building is being deliberately sited at great cost to further undermine ANY opportunity for The Historic Village to be a 'museum contender'. That's what it is all about. The best site (if any) is across the road, engineered and commercial zoning all ready and waiting. The Village management plan in place clearly spells out the critical contribution the Village Green provides the Village for events. Clearly the costs associated with the engineering of a suitable pad will be horrendous, along with the parking area. There won't be any windfall of value to the Village and it's financial viability will be undermined as TECT siphons of tenants and it's ability to stage events!
here we go again

I totally agree with you and Murray Guy (who SHOULD) be Mayor, this is (BS) they should have put a slip road at the end of 17 AVE instead of that skatepark the cost of all that concrete would have paid for this but TCC Don,t have a BRAIN between them, the ambulance wastes minutes going up the hill and along to 15th to get on to the MWay,all rubbish, a slip lane off Takitimu drive coming from the lakes on to the motorway near the over bridge could save on travel you have to go all the way down to elizabeth st to turn round and go back, all the $thousands of $$$ TCC spend could put a slip road before over bridge on 11th ave, this would save congestion on Waihi road for all those going to Bethleham,GOSH,why didnt i think of this when i designed it,OH thats right IMMMM
