Pedestrians to reclaim The Strand?

Get all cars out of the Wharf St restaurant belt. 'Go the whole hog,” suggests Tauranga MP Simon Bridges.

And while we're at, let's get cars off The Strand between the roundabout at the bottom of Devonport Rd and Harington St. 'There's not much to be lost doing that,” says the straight-talking MP.

Getting rid of cars on The Strand 'wouldn't do anyone any harm,” says MP Simon Bridges. Photo: Tracy Hardy

But he understands people might not buy into the idea. 'I think, inevitably, there's a fair degree of conservatism about these things; people understandably worry about the unknowns like the loss of parking and the loss of a thoroughfare.”

But, Simon says, getting rid of cars from these two streets 'wouldn't do anyone any harm”.

The MP says the revitalisation of the CBD is a priority for everyone. But while a few things are going well like the arrival of 400-plus TrustPower workers and, over time, the arrival of a tertiary campus, there are a few practical things that could be done too.

'A lot of people don't think the semi-carless Wharf St is working particularly well.” He likes what's been done with the rustic street furniture and branding. 'But it's half-hearted, it's neither fish nor fowl – and I think we should have gotten rid of car completely.”

'And for a long time I've thought the same is true for The Strand.

Simon believes making both precincts carless would 'over time work a treat”.

'Given that nearly all the retail on The Strand is hospitality, to me it's the next logical step.” He's believes the parking on the seaward side of the railway should be retained. 'People want and need good carparking in and around the CBD so it would be unrealistic to get rid of that.”

People also raise the issue of moving the railway line. 'But that would cost hundreds of millions of dollars. And while never say never, it's not going to happen in the short-term.”

But shutting out cars would be relatively easy, he believes. 'All it would take was a few strokes of a pen. It's a bit like Hairy Maclary. We would worry until it happens. And when it does happen, there's no turning back.”

And he'd be very interested to hear what other people think of the idea. 'I will certainly be taking it up with Tauranga City councillors when I meet with them next time.”

To little to late. Council have killed city centre. People are tired of endless money spending. We have bay fair, Bethlehem, Tauriko shopping centre on soon. Give up mr bridges, sack the councillors that have let this happen. Think of the business that have shut there doors. Money lost. No one cares about them. Bloody disgrace , council shame on YOU.

Does this mean that you are going to apply political pressure on the duly elected Tauranga City Council in order to get what you want even if it is not necessarily what the people that duly voted the City Council in, want?

Ill-informed Simon.

I believe your comments are the thoughts of your wife as she has suggested the same in these columns before. To close the Strand will close one of the two major through accesses to the retail area of the CBD. The only other access being Cameron Road. The retail area is operational from 8am to 6pm seven days a week and you are willing to sacrifice 500 businesses viability for the sake of 30 bars and restaurants who mainly operate after 4pm. I think you have been ill-informed and should get your facts from the CBD retailers rather than Priority One or Tuskany/Mainstreet. You are right with your parking comments and the sooner the Southern Waterfront parking is reinstated the better off the businesses in the CBD will be. All the CBD businesses need more people 24 hours a day and all lost parking needs to be replaced urgently. Simple.

I Think

I think reducing car parks from the CBD will drive people out of it to other shopping areas. It is a wonder he did not suggest to put in a cycleway. It is hard enough getting into town from the Western Bay without less parks in the CBD.It is a local council issue not a central Government issue anyway.

Sort of..

I agree that Wharf St is a mess. Close it off to cars completely. The bloke who is blaming the loss of parking there for the decline in his business needs to think that through. There is a heap of parking a mere 50 metres away. But.. Instead of closing off more streets, how about making the bottom of Devonport and along the Strand to Harrington one-way? That would enable wider footpaths without making access too difficult

dumb idea database

maybe simon should ask the business owners on the strand what they think. Those running sucessful businesses would know what makes sense for the area, rather than fiddling by a career politician.

Eat Street in Rotorua is a wonderful place. But it has full overhead cover, and someone has to pay for that. But well done, it could be better than Lygon Street in Melbourne.

Cars

I think if cars be restricted to one way might be ok but to be rid of them completely NO! People like to drive through to see what going on and to be dropped off for Dinner so Driver can then go find a park! Its hard enough now to find Car-parking!

If, and only if..

Mr Bridges is a businessman with a shrewd knowledge of the real workings of industry, then let's give him some space here, is he?..I don't know..who does?

People vs Simon Bridges

Maybe he should think a bit further out about the disabled people that will not be able to get to his car less strand. How selfish can he be. Obviously the minorities do not count in his new Tauranga CBD. Think I will stay Mt side from now on.

Yes close them both completely once and for all,it is the most sensible thing Simon has said in a long time in addition smoking should be banned as well.

Bring back parking ...

No parking means no people means no businesses means no CBD rates paid to Council, I am sure that they will figure that afterwards maybe?

When Simon John Bridges does visit this area he is embarrassed by the local motorist gesturing him whist trying to maintain appearances. Winston never had this problem. Answer is exactly what is being presented. Feed the gullible no challenge the basis of what this country has become.
