The alternative New Zealand flag flying on a pole at the Te Puke Memorial Hall has been ripped from the flagpole and replaced with a pair of shoes.
Shoes slung from powerlines generally denote a tinny house in the immediate area.

Hall chairperson Christine Clement says the steel flagpole has also been damaged and will need replacing.
The current New Zealand flag is still flying
"We were flying both flags to show the public the differences. I am not sure if this is a response to us being a War Memorial or just as general feedback," says Christine.
The Te Puke War Memorial Hall was chosen as an official site by the Flag Consideration Project to fly the current New Zealand flag alongside the Kyle Lockwood designed flag.

Its disrepectful to fly any flag other than the NZ flag on our War Museum. What did you expect would happen?
Democracy?

Rabid opposition helps no one. Just shows the idiocy of some opponents to change.

Perhaps, but much more likely it raises the issue of what an trashy alternative it is. There is no real contest and all these polly muppets running around waving their hands in the air does not help except to ensure that the best (existing flag) one stays.
Most excellant

job done, only the real flag should be put up and no other piece of rubbish should leave the rubbish bin.
idiocy..

is the showing of disrespect by flying that alternative flag on the war memorial hall before the nation has chosen it. Different style of Freedom of speech I'd say by taking that flag down.
Thoughtless ..

Well it is a war memorial hall .. in memory of our war dead .. some might see flying an a alternative flag other than the one they fought and died under as being disrespectful .. not that I condone it .. but a bit of thought beforehand on where they fly the alternative flag might have been in order ..
Well done

As a former Army soldier i find displaying a flag that is not the national flag an insult. Im sure other diggers found this as amusing as i did...
Well done!

Would be so simple and cost effective if we could just get the Aussies to change their flag---ie green and gold with a kangaroo on it.
PS

I only hope those that do not support John's flash new HanKey step up and make their vote heard on the day..

It was very foolish to fly the alternate flag don't you know how the money was raised in 1952 for the hall and the strong feeling of the soldiers then. The committee should have left well alone and keep their noses out of it

It sickens me that in this day and age when people are unnecessarily offended over the most idiotic things. That someone would be stupid enough to do something as truly offensive as to fly an alternate flag over a war memorial of all things. Couldn't be happier someone ripped it down and I hope who ever the monkey it was who came up with the idea of urinating on the graves of those who died for our freedom by flying that atrocity, pays for any damage.
Some people just don't get it..

the new flag, public opinion has always shown this, no matter how many rugby heroes they bribe to support the change, we don't want it. What an insult to fly this abomination at the war museum. How many Christchurch houses could have been rebuilt for 26 million I wonder
why
Posted on 26-02-2016 10:09 | By karlpenlington
why so much hate, anger and violence. yes I prefer the existing flag but I am concerned about the hate people are showing. all this is doing is showing our kids that if you don't like something it is ok to burn it rip it or break it, not talk about it like adults
I'd say....

The new flag/rag has been given the boot? Good on them... we all know the decision has already been made... we only have to go thru the motions of a referendum.... but they will fudge the numbers so the rag gets in.... may as well put a little trade mark (TM) on the corner as well. I wonder if the new rags will be made in China or here in NZ?
